WHERE IN THE WORLD IS SRI LANKA?
Sri Lanka is the 3rd
largest tea producing country in the world, and is one of the
world's leading tea exporters. The tea sector in Sri Lanka has
always been a vital component of her economy. It is the
country's largest employer -- providing employment both directly
and indirectly to over one million people. Ceylon tea from Sri
Lanka, derives its unique characteristics from the influence of
climatic and soil conditions which imparts to the tea a variety
of flavors and aromas. Sri Lanka produces tea throughout the
year and the growing areas are mainly concentrated in the
central highlands and southern inland areas of the island. They
are broadly grouped according to their elevations.
HIGH GROWN TEA
Ranging from 1200 meters (4,000 feet) elevation and upwards
High grown teas from Sri Lanka are reputed for their taste and
aroma and are much sought after by blenders in tea importing
countries.
MEDIUM GROWN TEA
In areas between 600-1200
meters (approximately 2,000-4,000 feet) elevation
Medium grown teas produce a thick coloury tea popular in
Australia, Europe, Japan and North America.
LOW GROWN TEA
At sea level up to 600 meters
(approximately 2,000 feet) elevation
Low grown teas are made into a leafy grade of tea where the tea
leaves are well twisted and retain much of their original
length. These are mainly popular in Western Asia, the Middle
East and Russia.
SRI LANKA TEA PROCESS
Sri Lanka mainly produces orthodox teas. In the orthodox process
of production, semi-dry green leaves are rolled by a machine to
rupture and twist the leaves. The crushed leaves are allowed to
oxidize, and then are fired to stop oxidation and dry the leaf.
The end product is a black tea.
