About Tea

Health Benefits of Tea

The health benefits of tea have been a widely held belief among many cultures the world over for centuries. And today’s research is beginning to back up those beliefs with hard science. While green tea, because of the lesser oxidation, has greater health benefits than black tea, all teas made from the tea bush Camellia sinensis, have health benefits.

The antioxidant properties of tea appear to lower LDL cholesterol levels, possibly guard against some cancers such as skin and lung cancer and help improve cardiovascular health by repairing damaged blood vessels. And we have to mention the anti-aging effect of reduced free radicals from the antioxidants in tea.

The flavonoids in black tea, especially over long-term consumption, have been associated with lowering the risk of stroke in men. And the fluoride in tea has been shown to contribute to stronger bones and teeth.

And, of course, the polyphenols tend to increase the white blood cell count for greater immune functioning. They also stimulate the flow of digestive fluids to help with digestion of fatty foods.

Lastly, the catechins in tea help prevent food poisoning because, as a powerful sterilizing agent, they kill germs and bacteria.

Ceylon Treasures’ teas come from the highlands of Sri Lanka, the world’s largest exporter of tea. We have several varieties of black tea including Earl Grey, and we have four green teas including Original, Lemon, Earl Grey and Jasmine. In addition, we carry a large assortment of teas that not only enjoy the benefits of black or green tea, but also the infusion of spices and flavorings known to have additional health benefits of their own.

For instance, take Clove Flavor Tea from Batik. Cloves have significant amounts of eugenol, an anti-inflammatory. And cloves also contain their own flavonoids that contribute to the effects of the flavonoids in the tea.

Cinnamon Flavor Tea from Batik has the benefit of cinnamon’s essential oils which qualify as anti-microbial, known for its ability to stop the growth of bacteria as well as fungi. Cinnamon may also aid in the processing of sugar by type 2 diabetics. But perhaps the best function of cinnamon is its scent, known to be a brain-function booster. The scent actually enhances cognitive processing!

Chamomile Flavor Tea from Batik is another popular flavor. People have used chamomile tea for centuries when they felt run down or stressed. However, new research actually suggests that chamomile may have a variety of health benefits such as fighting the common cold and the ability to relieve menstrual cramps.

Cardamom Flavored Tea from Batik may have a number of benefits including reducing stomach cramps, stimulating digestion and reducing gas.

Ginger Flavored Tea from Batik has a fascinating benefit of its own. Research on motion sickness found that ginger actually does a better job of reducing susceptibility to motion sickness than Dramamine. While we don’t suggest replacing your Dramamine with ginger flavored tea, you may find it very beneficial on those long road trips or following the kids around the amusement park.

Ceylon Treasures also carries teas infused with the flavors of many different fruits and even flowers, each with its own well known benefits. The benefits of our Calcium Tea and our Vitamin C Teas are self-explanatory.

Whatever tea you choose to enjoy from Ceylon Treasures, remember that no tea should be considered a replacement for sound medical advice from your practitioner. While each of our teas has its own benefits, drink tea first and foremost for the wonderful flavors of this popular light beverage.
